    Mangion Charles

    Mangion Charles

I was born in November 1952 and live in Hal Luqa. I am married to Carmen and have three children, Malcolm, Marie-Claire and Gabriella.

I had my primary education in Hal Luqa and continued my secondary level education at the Lyceum in Hamrun. I graduated from the University of Malta with a B.A (Hons) degree in English Literature (1974) and achieved the Doctorate in Laws in 1982. I practice my profession as Notary with my company Mangion & Mangion Ltd.

My parents were more than an influence to me; they were my inspiration. My parents thought me that every person has a talent and should have the chance to develop that talent. My parents thought me that we should use whatever talent we have to help people least able to help themselves.

And that’s why I joined Labour; out of faith, faith in people, that all should have the opportunity to realize their potential. The only reason that I am in politics is to be of service to the people; to make a difference; to achieve change in our country.

In 1987, I was first elected to Parliament and continued to be elected in the following general elections. As a Member of Parliament, I represent the 6th District – Qormi, Siggiewi and Luqa.

From 1992 and 1994, I served as a Shadow Minister of Home Affairs and between 1994 and 1996, I served as Shadow Minister of Industry and Local Government. Moreover, from the 1992 and 1994, I served as a Deputy Speaker to the House of Representatives.

From 1996 and 1998, I have served as a Minister of Justice and Local Government.

In May 2003, the Labour Party delegates have elected me as a Deputy Leader of the Party for parliamentary affairs. I held this role until after the general elections of 2008.

As from 2003 up to today, I have been the Shadow Minister for Finance.

Following the general election of 2008, I was sworn in as Leader of the Opposition until the newly elected Dr. Joseph Muscat was co opted in Parliament and assumed his constitutional role as Leader of the Opposition.

Since then I have been carrying out my parliamentary duties as Shadow Minister for Finance and Chairman for The Public Accounts Committee as well as parliamentary deputy for the 6th and  4th district.
